Charleston Air Force Station, 1955

Paul’s new favorite is an image that highlights Cold War air defense in Maine. He explains, “This aerial photograph from the Sewall Aerial Photographs Collection dated July 11, 1955 shows Charleston Air Force Station, an air defense radar site located atop Charleston Hill in Charleston, Maine. The dome housing the radar antenna is seen at the end of the road that leads to the very top of the hill, an elevation of about 900 feet. The facility was operational until 1980. Today the site is the location of the Charleston Correctional Facility.”

Paul is working to make the Sewall Company photographs available in DigitalCommons@UMaine.  For more information, contact him at 207.581.9524 or paul.smitherman@maine.edu.
