Explore hot topics with UMaine Libraries’ Email Challenges

Looking for a fresh way to dive into current issues and sharpen your skills? Check out UMaine Libraries’ Email Challenges! These curated, bite-sized learning experiences tackle both academic interests and broader social concerns. Past challenges have explored fascinating topics like artificial intelligence, racial justice, literature reviews, and power research techniques. Best of all, the content is crafted by librarians, often inspired by faculty requests or collaborations with students.

Here’s how it works: when a challenge goes “live,” you can sign up to receive five fun and informative daily emails. Anyone from UMaine or beyond may sign up to participate. Not into daily emails? No worries — access the content whenever it’s convenient and share it with your network.

Behind the scenes tour of Special Collections & Projects

Have you ever wondered what types of materials are located in Fogler’s Special Collections and what types of partnerships are possible? Join a behind the scenes tour of Special Collections and Projects with the Provost and learn more about ongoing projects to digitize historical materials. The 45-minute tour will take place Monday, Dec 9, at 2 p.m. No need to sign up; just stop by the reading room on the third floor of Fogler to join the tour and discussion.

Explore Maine’s forests after dark with North Woods at Night

North Woods at Night, edited by Steven Long and introduced by award-winning journalist Ret Talbot, is a spellbinding anthology of 38 Maine writers capturing the allure and mystery of the state’s largest forest. Through evocative poems, stories, and essays, the collection offers a glimpse into nighttime camping adventures, encounters with wildlife, and moments of peaceful reflection under the stars.

The anthology features Fogler Library’s own Michael G. Dunn, Library Specialist and co-creator of Fogler’s Book Talk events. Michael reflects on his contribution: “After years of writing, it is not only a huge boon for me to be included alongside these other remarkable Maine-based writers, writing about my childhood home and delving into Maine cryptid lore, but it is also truly humbling to be included in an anthology that is for a worthy cause.”

Proceeds from the book will benefit the Forest Society of Maine, helping to preserve the state’s forest heritage. Available in e-book and softcover this December, North Woods at Night is both a literary treasure and a chance to support an important conservation effort.

New from Special Collections and Projects: Papers of Dr. Sandra L. Caron

The Special Collections and Projects Department in Fogler Library has added new records to the online archival content management tool ArchivesSpace.

The papers of Dr. Sandra (Sandy) L. Caron are now available to researchers. The papers include material related to some of the various committees and projects with which Caron was involved at UMaine during her 36 years as a faculty member. This includes the Athletics Advisory Board; UMaine Campus Climate, a project focused on students’ perceptions of and experiences with sexual harassment; and “A Kiss to Remember: Reclaim the Record,” a Guinness Book of Records attempt.

The papers also include material related to the Greek Peer Educators, Male Athletes Against Violence, and Athletes for Sexual Responsibility; original and final syllabus for Human Sexuality courses taught by Caron; and Human Development & Family Studies Program administrative material.

Database trial of SCOPUS November 11–December 10

We are pleased to announce a University of Maine system-wide trial of SCOPUS. SCOPUS is a subscription-based database from Elsevier that indexes peer-reviewed literature, including more than 97 million articles, books, conference proceedings, and preprints from 1788 to the present. It covers a wide range of disciplines, including science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and arts and humanities. Much like Web of Science, which we currently subscribe to, it can be used to perform searches of peer-reviewed materials, track the impact of your publications, and seek collaboration opportunities with fellow researchers. Journal title metrics include SNIP, SJR, and CiteScore; and author information includes Profiles, H-index, and publication lists. The database also has tools for tracking, analyzing, and visualizing research, as well as citation indexing.

We invite the UMaine community to investigate the SCOPUS database during a four week trial, from November 11–December 10, 2024. Starting Nov. 11, any UMaine student, staff, or faculty member may access SCOPUS through the Library Database page for trials. After using SCOPUS, please tell us what you think on this feedback form.

More information about Scopus is available at their official product page and preview site. If you have questions about SCOPUS, reach out to your subject specialist librarian.
