Fogler Highlights March Commemorative Months

As March is both Women’s History Month and Maine’s Francophonie Month, we are highlighting both our Women’s History Resources guide and our Franco-American & Francophonie Resources guide, both of which provide links to materials accessible through UMaine Libraries related to these two important groups.

Bookstore AMP (Academic Materials Program) to include library resources available to students

Thanks to a new collaboration between UMaine Libraries and the Bookstore, students will be able to discover more easily whether their free required course materials, originally accessible only through the library, could be accessed electronically directly through the AMP program. Links added through this partnership include both materials purchased by UMaine Libraries as well as Open Educational Resources. For faculty: be sure to provide the Bookstore with your courses’ reading lists each semester, so staff can add any available library ebook and/or OER links in student AMP accounts for their courses. Keep your eyes open for this new feature starting with the fall semester!

Upcoming Salon event: Partnering with Students to (re)Claim the Joy of Teaching and Facilitate Culture Change in Higher Education

When students are brought into conversations about teaching and partner with faculty in co-designing teaching and learning, beautiful things can happen. Faculty can find courage, new perspectives into student learning, and greater satisfaction in teaching. On March 12, 5:30–7 p.m., join Professor Sarah Bunnell, Director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning and an Associate Professor of Psychology at Elon College, North Carolina and others as we explore how we can build student partnership programs and how such partnerships might benefit UMaine.

The event will take place in the Salon at Fogler Library, and will also be available via Zoom.

Visit the Salon website for additional information.

(Hybrid) Tea with the Dean and Open Access Publishing Resources Showcase

UMaine Libraries’ Hybrid Tea with the Dean and Open Access Publishing Resources Showcase with Head of Collection Services Deb Rollins and Open Scholarship Librarian Casey Koons will take place on Thursday, March 27, at 3 p.m. in the Salon, Fogler Library, and via Zoom.

Deborah Rollins will talk about open access collections and costs, as well as library support of University of Maine authors through open access publishing fee waivers.

Casey Koons will discuss key aspects of his role in advancing open access publication. He will outline the introduction of a new DOI-minting service, designed to provide persistent identifiers that enhance the accessibility and discoverability of scholarly and creative work. Koons will also highlight the role of institutional repositories in supporting Open Access initiatives, ensuring broader dissemination and long-term preservation of research outputs. Additionally, he will share updates on efforts to improve the functionality and usability of repository platforms, focusing on transitioning to more automated, modern systems that are intuitive and easy to navigate for both researchers and administrators.

Women and Social Movements International: 1840 to Present

Women and Social Movements, International 1840–present is a digital collection of primary materials drawn from more than 300 repositories. Through the writings of women activists, their personal letters and diaries, and the proceedings of conferences at which pivotal decisions were made, the database shows how women’s social movements shaped many of the events and attitudes that have defined modern life. It covers issues related to peace, poverty, child labor, literacy, disease prevention, and global inequality.
