University of Maine Press announces publication of Piecework/Travail à la pièce
The University of Maine Press is excited to announce the publication of “Piecework/Travail à la pièce,” a bilingual collection of two plays by Vermont playwright and performer Abby Paige. This landmark publication of Paige’s solo works and their French translations offers unique insight into the Franco American experience and the long, often-invisible history of the borderlands between francophone Canada and northern New England.
The University of Maine Press and the Franco American Center will celebrate this milestone publication on Saturday, April 5, 6:30 p.m. at the Blackbox Theater, Class of 1944 Hall, University of Maine. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy an evening of entertainment hosted by Abby Paige, including music, readings, performances, and conversation! Free admission. Click here for additional information.

Library Student Ambassadors interview: Nico Deville in Special Collections and Projects
Fogler’s Student Ambassadors will be interviewing our student workers through the fall semester. This week’s interview was conducted by Lincoln Tiner.
Nico Deville (she/they) is a double-major in English and Art currently working on “re-cataloguing old UMaine sports team photos by taking them out of the cabinets and into storage boxes for Matthew Revitt’s work on the UMaine university archival collection.” Nico loves reading horror, sci-fi, and creative writing and commented that “even reading is an act of writing. I don’t think I can really underestimate the ways in which reading helps and informs and benefits my writing.” Regarding Fogler Library Nico says, “there are so many stories here. There’s so much knowledge here. I always think of the university library as the heart of a university. You come here to be more knowledgeable about something and that’s the epitome of the library.” Their favorite spot is on the third floor by a window, especially when it starts to get dark. They wish more people knew about Special Collections and Projects and that Fogler hosts an event series in the Salon. In the future, they’d like to see events in the library on fiction and also on archives work, and to know more about book binding at Fogler because “More people should know about book preservation. I think that’s really important, especially physical preservation in the age of AI!”

Celebrating 400,000 Interlibrary Loan Requests!
Fogler’s Interlibrary Loan (ILL) unit celebrated its 400,000th request through ILLiad in March! ILLiad is a software that connects us with other libraries internationally to find materials you need for your research and to share our materials with other libraries. The University of Maine first obtained ILLiad in the early 2000s and we’ve been increasing use ever since. Each request, whether it comes from another library or from one of our own patrons, has contributed to the current count of 400,000 and climbing.

UMaine Libraries represented at Maine’s annual Cultural
Advocacy Day
| |
On March 13, University Archivist
Matthew Revitt attended Cultural
Advocacy Day, an annual event in
Augusta dedicated to connecting
with peers, celebrating the impact
of cultural access, and educating
our elected officials about the vital
role our sector plays in Maine’s
economy and communities. The
event is organized by the Cultural
Alliance of Maine and was
presented in partnership with
Maine Archives & Museums, Maine
Film Association, Maine Humanities
Council, Maine Library Association,
Maine Preservation, and the New
England Museum Association.
| |
The event was a chance to network with culture workers from across the state and meet with legislators to discuss the challenges facing organizations and Maine’s creative economy as a whole.
The event also featured performances by George Loring (Penobscot guitarist), Kenneth & Jane Brooks (Maine Country Music Hall of Fame inductees on upright bass and guitar) and Sayon Camara (Djembefola from the Malinke of Guinea), and remarks from Senator Rick Bennett (R-Oxford) and Senator Peggy Rotundo (D-Androscoggin).
