Library Staff Event: Library Legislation with Sonya Durney
On Monday, June 9, Fogler Library held their annual professional development event. This year, we invited Sonya Durney, a librarian at the University of New England and active member of both the American and Maine Library Associations, to present in Fogler’s Salon. She gave an audience composed of both UMaine Libraries staff and library staff from nearby institutions an overview of the national and state-level legislation affecting or attempting to affect libraries in Maine. We also discussed resources and strategies for staying up to date on current events and helping our UMaine community do the same. We’re so grateful to Sonya for taking the time to share her insight and experience with us!
Sonya Durney is co-editor of the book “Legislative Advocacy and Public Policy Work for Academic and Research Library Workers: Perspectives and Strategies” in which Assistant Collection Services and InterLibrary Loan (ILL) Librarian Lindsay Decker co-authored the chapter “Bridging Gaps: Librarians Fostering Intellectual Freedom Across State Lines.”

Fogler hosts Maine Active Collections Forum
On Friday, June 6, Fogler Library hosted the Maine Active Collections Forum in the Salon. The event was a day of learning and conversation about using the active collections framework to encourage more focused and “right-sized” collections with an eye towards sustainability. The forum was co-organized by University Archivist Matthew Revitt and was attended by more than 70 archive, library and museum professionals from across the state.

Fogler Library staff recently had the pleasure of connecting with a number of UMaine retirees at the 2025 Retiree Homecoming, including Dossey Viger, the granddaughter of Raymond H. Fogler.
It was very informative to hear many retirees’ stories of time spent studying and working at Fogler Library. Thank you to the President’s Council of Retired Employees and the University of Maine Foundation for all of their work organizing the event.

UMaine Libraries Companion Animals Feature: Molly
From time to time, UMaine Libraries, taking a leaf out of UMaine’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ book, will feature the companion animal/s of one of our employees.
First up is Molly, companion to Betsy Rose, Assistant Director of UMaine Press. Molly is a Lhasa Apso/Shih Tzu/Cocker Spaniel mix (according to her DNA test), whom Rose and her husband adopted from the Central Vermont Humane Society in February 2022. She is believed to be around 13 years old. Rose says, “Molly enjoys taking walks, chasing birds and chipmunks, sleeping, digging holes, eating, lunging at our cats (but never hurting them!), riding in the car, and being petted. She has one brown eye and one blue eye. She also has “cherry eye,” a condition where her third eyelid became detached earlier in her life; it has no cure at her age, but we give her drops to maintain her eye health. I think she is quite beautiful, cherry eye and all! She’s good with all creatures, though she will bark back if barked at — she’s not one to walk away from a confrontation. She has the energy and spirit of a much younger dog, so we’re not completely sure they got her age right!”
