New Assistant Dean of Libraries Appointment
UMaine Libraries is pleased to announce that Meg Colbert, Library Coordinator at Merrill Library at UMaine Machias, will be stepping into a new role as Assistant Dean of Libraries for a temporary one-year appointment beginning this August.
In this position, Colbert will work closely with UMaine Dean of Libraries Daisy Domínguez Singh to support the implementation of strategic initiatives across UMaine Libraries. She will help manage cross-campus projects, align efforts with institutional priorities, and ensure consistent communication and progress tracking across departments.
Colbert’s appointment marks an exciting step forward for the Libraries, strengthening the partnership between Orono and Machias and amplifying the voice of UMM in library system planning. While she’ll be primarily based at UMM, Colbert will continue to make occasional visits to Orono as needed and remain closely connected to Merrill Library throughout her appointment.
Please join us in congratulating Colbert on this new opportunity!

Head of Special Collections and Projects featured on “Maine Calling”
Greg Curtis, Head of Special Collections and Projects, was a feature caller on the Maine Public Radio show “Maine Calling” during an episode entitled “Preserving Memories.”
What treasures are hidden in attics and basements all over Maine? Anyone who has gone through a family members’ keepsakes and memorabilia knows that among a lot of junk, certain finds turn up — letters that share family lore, a military uniform, photos of historic value, and other cherished heirlooms. Curtis discusses what to assess, donate or sell — and ways to document or preserve. The intro to Curtis’ call begins around minute 45.
| | New to Fogler Library’s rare book holdings is a history volume written in rhyme! Published in 1813, “A metrical history of England” by Thomas Dibdin (1771–1841) contains a history of that Green Isle in a style you won’t forget. Why, you may ask? Because it’s neat! But also, studies have shown rhyming aids the brain in memory and recall, makes history more engaging, boosts vocabulary, and encourages imagination. Rhymes in the written word continue a long tradition of rhyming in oral history. | |
