Whether they are treated as consumables, research subjects, companions, or family, human civilization relies heavily on the lives of other animals. Given these disparate — and not necessarily mutually exclusive — ways of interacting with nonhuman animals, what does it mean to respect them? Which ideas and practices serve this end? Which cultures and traditions provide relevant insights? How might we treat animals as nonhuman persons? Discussants:
