Welcome Meg Colbert, Merrill Library Coordinator!

Margaret (Meg) Colbert has been appointed Merrill Library Coordinator and will begin her tenure on July 29, 2024. In this role, she will oversee all aspects of Merrill Library at the University of Maine at Machias, including access services, reference, instruction, and programming. She will be working closely and reciprocally with Fogler Library to align Merrill’s services with those of Fogler and will advise the Dean of Libraries on Machias procedures, regulations, and needs.

Colbert comes to us from the Eastport Arts Center, where she has held the position of Executive Director for over a year and a half. Prior to this, she spent over five years as Managing Director/Director of Production at Boxart, New York, where she honed her skills in project leadership, personnel management, and strategic planning while managing diverse teams to enhance operational efficiency.

Colbert holds a Master of Science in Information and Library Science from the State University

of New York at Buffalo, with a focus on Archives, Special Collections, and Archival Processing/Databases. She also holds an MA in Art History from Hunter College and is interested in bridging the worlds of fine arts and library science. She brings with her a strong enthusiasm for contributing to the unique academic experience at the University of Maine at Machias and Merrill Library.

New from Special Collections and Projects 

The Special Collections and Projects Department in Fogler Library has added a new collection to the online archival content management tool ArchivesSpace. 

In 1945, Seaman 1st Class Donald V. Brown of Fairfield, Maine married Christine Bishop. Three days later he was deployed. As an engineer with the Pacific Fleet Radio Unit, Brown was first stationed in San Francisco, and then Guam. His nearly daily letters to his wife are full of declarations of love but also describe his daily routines and other activities, including field trips with friends, USO shows, and tennis matches. It seems that most of Brown’s work with the radio unit was conducted overnight, leaving ample free time during the day.

The letters have not been transcribed or made available digitally, but may be requested for retrieval and in-person viewing in the library.
