(Hybrid) Tea with the Dean and Open Access Publishing Resources Showcase

UMaine Libraries’ Hybrid Tea with the Dean and Open Access Publishing Resources Showcase with Head of Collection Services Deb Rollins and Open Scholarship Librarian Casey Koons will take place on Thursday, March 27, at 3 p.m. in the Salon, Fogler Library, and via Zoom.

Deborah Rollins will talk about open access collections and costs, as well as library support of University of Maine authors through open access publishing fee waivers.

Casey Koons will discuss key aspects of his role in advancing open access publication. He will outline the introduction of a new DOI-minting service, designed to provide persistent identifiers that enhance the accessibility and discoverability of scholarly and creative work. Koons will also highlight the role of institutional repositories in supporting Open Access initiatives, ensuring broader dissemination and long-term preservation of research outputs. Additionally, he will share updates on efforts to improve the functionality and usability of repository platforms, focusing on transitioning to more automated, modern systems that are intuitive and easy to navigate for both researchers and administrators.

Celebrating 400,000 Interlibrary Loan requests!

Fogler’s Interlibrary Loan (ILL) department is celebrating their 400,000th request through ILLiad this week! ILLiad is a software that connects us with other libraries internationally to find materials you need for your research and to share our materials with other libraries. The University of Maine first obtained ILLiad in the early 2000s and we’ve been increasing use ever since. Each request, whether it came from another library or from one of our own patrons, has contributed to the current count of 400,000 and climbing.

If you need books or articles not held by Fogler Library, remember that there are a few ways we can get them for you:

  • LibrarySearch for books held by other UMaine libraries.
  • MaineCat lets you request books held at other participating Maine libraries.
  • ILLiad is for any item (books, articles, dissertations, etc.) not available through LibrarySearch or MaineCat. These items might come from anywhere in the world!

For questions related to finding materials for your research don’t hesitate to reach out to your subject specialist librarian. You can contact ILL directly at library.ill@maine.edu or 207.581.1671.

UMaine Libraries represented at Maine’s annual Cultural Advocacy Day

On March 13, University Archivist Matthew Revitt attended Cultural Advocacy Day, an annual event in Augusta dedicated to connecting with peers, celebrating the impact of cultural access, and educating our elected officials about the vital role our sector plays in Maine’s economy and communities. The event is organized by the Cultural Alliance of Maine and was presented in partnership with Maine Archives & Museums, Maine Film Association, Maine Humanities Council, Maine Library Association, Maine Preservation and the New England Museum Association.

The event was a chance to network with culture workers from across the state and meet with legislators to discuss the challenges facing organizations and Maine’s creative economy as a whole.

The event also featured performances by George Loring (Penobscot guitarist), Kenneth & Jane Brooks (Maine Country Music Hall of Fame inductees on upright bass and guitar) and Sayon Camara (Djembefola from the Malinke of Guinea), and remarks from Senator Rick Bennett (R-Oxford) and Senator Peggy Rotundo (D-Androscoggin).

Digital Object Identifiers minting service now available

The Open Scholarship unit of Fogler Library now offers a service for minting Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for UMaine System publications, research, and shared objects. A Digital Object Identifier is a unique and persistent identifier and URL for a publication/object. It serves as an enduring path to the object’s location online despite changes to hosting over time. DOIs offer many benefits to your work, providing permanent and stable access to your material. This greatly enhances discoverability, making it easy to accurately cite your work. That, in turns, improves tracking and metrics, allowing automated systems to easily track citations of your work. For more information about DOIs, contact Open Scholarship Librarian Casey Koons and attend the upcoming Tea with the Dean, where Open Scholarship services will be featured.
