Cataloging: Special Collections Maine Juvenile Collections

Purpose: to give an overview and procedures for the processing of juvenile books in Special Collections. The Maine Juvenile Collection includes books written for children and young adults by Maine authors and/or about Maine subjects while the Children’s Collection addresses broader content.

Cataloging

No specific cataloging procedures.

General Classification

Use LC class PZXX + [author cutter] $b [title cutter] + [date].  Pre-stamp is “Maine Juv.” MARC field for call number is 050 or 090.  (Note: prior practice involved using alpha-only cutters for the title portion.) In general the call number will be PZ7, but LC class numbers should be consulted for proper classification.

EXCEPTION: The Jacob Abbott collection of early juvenile books uses bibliography numbers from C. J. Weber’s A Bibliography of Jacob Abbott(see Maine Juv. Ab27).  For these books, use MARC field 092 for the call number.

Children’s Collection

A second, rarely cataloged collection in Special Collections for children’s books NOT about Maine or written by Maine authors, the call number appears on the spine of the book as follows:
