Dr. Charlie Slavin, Dean of The Honors College

Moderator

Charlie Slavin was the Dean of the Honors College at the University of Maine.  His passion for interdisciplinary teaching and mentoring student research led him to the University’s Honors Program in 1997 and to advance its transition to an Honors College in 2002. During his tenure with Honors at UMaine, the number of students involved and graduating with Honors has tripled.

In 1984, Dr. Slavin joined the faculty of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Maine.  His research interests span the boundary between real and complex analysis, primarily in the areas of harmonic analysis and singular integral theory, and he has an ongoing interest in the history and philosophy of science.  An active member of the National Collegiate Honors Council, Dr. Slavin sits on its Executive Committee and its Teaching & Learning Committee, and chairs its Professional Development Committee. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Pi Mu Epsilon.

Dr. Slavin earned his A.B. in Mathematics at Princeton University and both his M.A. and Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin.
