					Written in handwriting on the back of this photograph 
					
					is the 
					phrase, "Hancock Street 'Birth House.'" 
					
					
					Cohen's introduction to the poem 
					"Hancock Street" began:
					"I was born August 28, 1940, in a 
					three-story apartment house in Bangor, Maine.  The 
					second of three children, all born in our mother's 
					bed--whether out of economy or general fear of hospitals, I 
					don't know."
